Turkish Airlines Ladies Open Tournament – 9-13 May 2012 National Golf Club


The Ladies European Tour

is a professional ladies golf tournament which was founded in 1979 and is based in the UK. The tour is run by a Board of Directors and Players’ Council. Most of the players on the tour are European and the largest non-European contingency is from Australia.

Since the formative years and the development of LET the organization has grown into a truly international professional tour. Under the supervision of the Executive Director Alexandra Armas, lady golfers from 34 different competed for the massive prize of €10.000.000 in 2009 playing in 18 different countries. Total prize money in 2010 Order of Merit events approached €11 million.

The 2011 Turkish Airlines Ladies Open was held between May 5-8 at the National Golf Club in Belek. Christel Boeljon from Netherlands won with 5-under par and a 287 score and took the €37,500 1st place prize. Florentyna Parker from England and Becky Brewerton from the Wales came in the second place both with under 2 par and 290 score and won €21,437.50each.

A total of 126 professional lady golfers from 26 countries competed at the 3rd tournament held in Turkey. They came from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Czech Rep., Denmark, England, Spain, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, South Africa, Scotland, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, United States of America and Wales. There were 2 category one (Sophie Gustafson & Trish Johnson); 2 category two (Becky Brewerton & Gwladys Nocera) and 15 category 3 players, as well as top class invitees such as Christina Kim, Ryann O’Toole, Sarah Jane Smith and Sarah Kemp.

The first LET event in Turkey, the €200,000 Garanti American Express Turkish Ladies Open was held in 2008 at the National Golf Club and was won by Sweden’s Lotta Wahlin who stormed to a maiden tour victory by 12 shots.

Wahlin finished with a 7-under par total of 285. Johanna Westberg of Sweden and South Africa’s Stacy Lee Bregman and Spaniard Paula Marti (the 2002 order of merit winner) tied for second place at 5 over.

Due to economic crisis in 2009, the second LET event in Turkey was held in 2010 and was won by Melissa Reid. Reid completed the 54-hole event at three-under-par 216, which was good for a two-stroke win at the National Golf Club. Christel Bolejon posted a one-under 72 Africa’s Stacy Lee Bregman and Spaniard Paula Marti (the 2002 order of merit winner) tied for second place at 5 over.

Due to economic crisis in 2009, the second LET event in Turkey was held in 2010 and was won by Melissa Reid. Reid completed the 54-hole event at three-under-par 216, which was good for a two-stroke win at the National Golf Club. Christel Bolejon posted a one-under 72 to share second place at minus-two with Iben Tinning who closed with a 74. Boeljon was one of five players to break par on the finals day’s difficult conditions.

The National Golf Club was founded in 1994 and is the first golf course built in southern Turkey. The par-72 championship course was designed by Ryder Cup player David Feherty. The club has undergone an intensive course conditioning program and was in perfect condition for this year’s tournament. The golf course was presented in the most spectacular condition and was appreciated by all competitors, spectators, and officials. Credit goes to our Course Manager Alper Ates and his team for their efforts.
The Garanti Masters Pro-Am competition was held on Wednesday May 4th. The winner team was leaded by Sophie Gustafson from Sweden and the amateurs were Adam Gdktuna (Dr. Bulent Gdktuna’s son), Sinem Erulgen and NGC Junior Kezban Can.

The Pro-Am tournament which always precedes the main tournament on all the International Professional Golf Tours is one of the unique features of the game of golf. In no other sport does the audience get a chance to play alongside one of the greatest players at a renowned course.
At the Pro-Am a total of 36 teams, made up of 3 amateurs and one professional, competed for the Pro-Am prize. The Pro-Am is a great opportunity for our sponsors to invite their clients, potential clients, colleagues and friends to represent their companies at the Pro-Am competition and get a chance to play with world renowned players. This years’ Pro-Am was sponsored by Garanti Masters and they competed with 12 teams.

At the 2011 Garanti Masters Pro-Am, the National Golf Club’s Juniors demonstrated their talent again by taking 2 of the top 3 spots in the Pro-Am. Kezban Can played with the Swedish professional Sophie Gustafson to win the Pro-Am. The other two amateurs in their team were Adam Göktuna, Dr. Bülent Göktuna ‘s son and the socialite Sinem Erülgen. Sophie guided the team to a memorable victory with a total of 93 points.

Second place went to another Swede, Pernilla Lindberg who played with Ali Nuri Türker Kıvanç Oktay, Erhan Kamışlı to attain 87 points.
With 83 points, in the 3rd place were Serkan Şakar, Yurdanur Akkaş and Merve Akman (yet another NGC Junior) who were teamed up with Ryann O ‘Toole from USA.

PLAYERS


Sophie is one of the greatest ever European Lady professional players and will be coming to Turkey for the first time. She has amassed over 9million USD prize money in her career. Although playing mostly on the LPGA tour, Sophie has topped the European money list at no less than 4 occasions. Sophie has topped the 2009 season-ending Henderson Money List thereby finishing as the official European number one for the fourth time. Sophie is a very long hitter and we are all relishing the thought of seeing her negotiate the very demanding National Golf Course. She has represented Europe in the Solheim Cup on 7 consecutive occasions. She has taken 14 Victories in Europe and 10 LPGA titles. Sophie finished 15th on the first tour of the 2011 LPGA majors, the Kraft Nabisco. Two weeks ago Sophie partnered with Anna Norquist at the prestigious European Nations Cup to be the finalist. The team had also won in 2010. Her hobbies include motorbikes and music.

Sweden
Christina is one of the most colorful and charismatic players on the tour. She has been a last minute sponsors’ invite to the tournament. Christina has been playing on the LPGA tour since 2001. She has won the 2004 Longs Drugs Challenge and 2005 Mitchell Tour players Championship. With 44 top ten finishes Christina has banked 943,999 USD in prize money in the US Ladies Tour. Now a frequent and popular visitor to Europe, Christina Kim is a member of LET. Playing in 7 events last year, she posted three top 10 finishes including 2nd in the Open de Femino on the Costa del Sol, 4th at the Omega Dubai Masters and 9th in the Ricoh British Open. Christina has twice represented the USA in the Solheim Cup, in 2005 and 2009. As an amateur in the U.S. Junior Girls Championship she shot an incredible 8 under par 62 to win the qualifying stage.

Melissa is the winner of the 2010 Turkish Airlines Ladies Open. In 2010 Melissa finished 2nd in the German Open, 2nd in the South Wales Championship and 3rd in both the Uniqa Ladies and the Omega Dubai Masters. With other solid performances she took the 3rd place in the overall 2010 money list behind Lee Anne Pace and Laura Davies.Melissa turned professional quite rapidly; she had a short amateur career representing England and Great Britain at both junior and senior levels including the 2006 Curtis Cup team. She was the champion of the British Open Stroke Play in 2007. She turned professional in 2008 at the early age of 20. She has started well in 2011 with her 2nd place in the Australian Open and 4th place at the New Zealand Open.Two weeks ago Melissa partnered with Laura Davies in the European Nations Cup representing England. They finished in second place behind Norway’s Sophie Gustafson and Anna Norquist. When away from the golf course Melissa enjoys snowboarding, tennis and spending time with her friends.

England
As a brilliant amateur Becky represented Wales in the international level and Great Britain 2000as well in the Curtis Cup. She won the Welsh Girls Championship in 1997, 1999 and 2001, the British Ladies Open 1999 and 2002. Before turning pro in 2003 she had 2 runner ups playing as an amateur in LET events: the Tenerife Ladies Open and the WPGA European Open. Although only winning twice on the LET tour she had a total of 39 top ten finishes to her credit. Becky has won more than 842,000€ prize money so far. She won at the 2007 English Ladies Open and the 2009 Open de España Femenino. With her win in Spain she rose to No.3 on the 2009 money list. Becky has made two appearances for Europe in the Solheim Cup in 2007 & 2009. In last year’s Turkish Airlines Open Becky contended from day one level par after 36 holes finishing only 2nd behind the eventual winner Melissa Reid. She faded a little on the final run in shooting a final 76 to finish in joint 4th place with Mollie Frankenhauser.

Rebecca Brewerton
Wales
Carin is one of Europe’s all time superstars of the ladies game. She returned to Europe last year after spending 15 years on the LPGA Tour where she picked up 3 titles, 14 top ten finishes and won 4.5 million USD in prize money. In 2002 at the LPGA Carin posted 13 top ten finishes including 3 runners up spots. Playing only a few events in Europe each year, Carin has banked more than lmillion € prize money. Her only win on the LET was the 2000 Chrysler Classic. From the 104 tournaments played in Europe she has had an amazing 28 top ten finishes, including 5 last year. Her best 2010 performance was 2nd place the Lalla Meryem Cup. She has represented Europe in the Solheim Cup on 4 occasions with 11 wins and only 6 losses. She partnered with Sophie Gustafson and 2000 Ladies World Cup of Golf. Last November Carin was our guest at the NGC for the Presidents Day Putter where she played an exhibition match and gave our juniors a fun and instructive clinic. At the celebration dinner we auctioned Carin to play at one of the 2011 Turkish Airlines Pro-Am teams which raised 2000€ for the juniors fund.

Sweden
As an amateur Linda represented Sweden and was part of the team that took the European Champioship in 2001. Thesame year she won the Swedish Junior girls title. Turning professional in 2003 she finished in 3rd placeat the final Q school. Linda has 3 wins on the Ladies European tour: the 2006 Wales Ladies Championship, the 2007 Open de France and the UNIQA Ladies Open. She has had 13 top ten finishes and won a total of 568,551€ in prize money. Linda played for Europe in the Solhiem Cup in 2007. She has posted a top 10 finish already this year, taking 7th place in the New Zealand Open. Linda attended Oklahoma State University where she majored in General Business and minored in Economics. Linda enjoys all sports, especially ice hockey and soccer. She likes to shop, spend time with her boyfriend and family.

Sweeden
Anja is Germany’s leading Lady professional player with 3 victories to her credit. She won the 2008 Dubai Classic with a first place check of 75,000€. Her other 2 wins have been the 2008 Open de France, and last year’s La Meryam Cup in Morocco. Anja has posted 24 top ten finishes on the Ladies European tour and to date has banked 643,685€ in prize money. Before turning professional in 2003 Anja worked briefly as a medical technologist. As an amateur golfer she won the Italian and Swiss Ladies titles and won 3rd place in the prestigious British Ladies Amateur Championship. Before traveling to Turkey this May, Anja will be making a bid to retain her Morocco title and has teamed up with Caroline Masson to represent Germany in the European Nations Cup in Valencia.

Trish is one of England’s most successful Lady golfers of all times. Trish is one of the very few players to win all 4 matches in a Solheim Cup against the USA in the 1986 Curtis Cup. She turned professional in 1987 winning 3 tournaments on her 1st year on tour. Trish also won the LPGA qualifying school that year. She went on to achieve 3 victories on the US tour. Trish has spent her career globetrotting between Europe and the US. In Europe she has won no less than 17 LET tournaments. She finished as runner up 16 times. Trish had 2 great victories in 2010: the French and Tenerife Ladies Opens. She has twice shot 29 Trish Johnson over nine holes. At the Marrakesh Open she set the record of the most consecutive England birdies when she birdied the first 7 holes.

Karen is one of the leading players on the tour. Since 1985 she is also the chairman of the LET board thus she has played a leading role in the current success of the tour. Karen will be teeing it up at the NGC with the chance of becoming one of the few LET players to pass the lmillion € prize money mark. With more than 998,000€ already amassed she needs little to make the cut. The first of Karen’s victories came when playing through a snow storm in the 1986 Borlange Open in Sweden. She followed this title with victories at the 1988 Godiva European Open, 1990 BMV European Masters, 1992 Slovenian Open, 1993 Weetabix British Open, 1997 AMEX Tour players Championship and the French Open. Last year was her 16th year on the tour and she won the Portugal Ladies Open.

Australia
Marianne is Norway’s foremost lady golfer. She will be coming to the National for the second time. On her previous visit for the Turkish Open in 2008, she finished in 5th place behind runaway winner Lotta Wahlin. Marianne has won more than 400,000€ in prize money and picked up 2 titles. She had 17 top ten finishes including 5 runners up places. Her wins in Europe both came in 2009 at the Deutsche Bank Swiss Open and The Italian Open. As an amateur Marianne was in the2003 winning European team of the Junior Solheim Cup that beat the USA.The same year she won the British Girls Championship. When off the course she enjoys fishing, shopping, spending time with friends and boyfriend.

Norway
Virginie a professional since 2003 had her most successful year on tour in 2010 finishing in 5th place on the money list and winning more than 150,000€. She won her 3rd professional title at the Scottish Open in windy, cold and wet conditions. At the Archerfield Links she beat the trio of Lee Anne Pace, Trish Johnson and Sophie Walker by a single shot. With 3 second places, 2 third and a fourth places she had a remarkably consistent performance throughout the year.Virginie’s previous victories came in the 2005 KLM Dutch Open at Kennemer Golf Club where she beat Elenor Pilgrim at the first extra hole of a play off and the 2006 Finnair Masters. As an amateur, Virginie has won the French amateur title in 2002 and The European title in 2003. Although Virginie has not set the National alight on her previous 2 visits, we are expecting a special performance from her this year after such a strong performance throughout the year. When off the course Virgie’s main interest and passion is for her horses.

Gwladys Nocera now in her 9th year on the tour has amassed a total of 1,462,000€ in career earnings. The winner of 10 events on the Ladies European Tour, she topped the money list in 2008 winning 391,839€ that year by taking 4 titles: the Scottish Open, the ABN AMRO Ladies, the SAS Ladies Masters, the Madrid Ladies Masters. Her other wins include the 2006 Swiss Ladies Open, the BMW Italian Open and the Catalonian Ladies Masters.Gwladys Nocera now in her 9th year on the tour has amassed a total of 1,462,000€ in career earnings. Florentyna turned pro in 2009 and she already has a victory under her belt. In her second season on the tour she took the ABN AMRO Ladies Open in Rotterdam where she beat Scotland’s Krystal Caithness by 2 shots to take the title. In her 2 seasons so far she has had nine top 10 places and improved from 24 on the money list in 2009 to 11th in 2010 winning a total of 121,140c. In last year’s Turkish Airlines Ladies Open Florentyna played wonderfully from start to finish, just fading the last few holes but she held on to take the joint 6th place. As an amateur Florentyna represented Great Britain and Ireland in the 2008 Curtis Cup. She was a runner up in the 2008 English Match Play Championship and 3rd in the English Stroke Play. Her hobbies include tennis, shopping and reading.
